CARAT

Carat describes the weight of a diamond or gemstone.

Since larger diamonds are rarer in nature, the price increases exponentially with increasing weight and unchanged quality.

Originally the carat was the weight of a dried kernel of the carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua).

1.00 ct. = 0.2 g

One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.

With diamonds smaller than one carat, every carat is subdivided into 100 points – similar to the cents in a euro. 0.75 ct. = 75 points, 1/2 ct. = 50 points.
